ST. GEORGE ISLAND, Fla. - Franklin County firefighters are battling a large fire on St. George Island which initially threatened houses in the coastal beach community.
Sheriff A.J. Smith said the fire is believed to have started while a homeowner was burning leaves, according to ABC News Affiliate WTXL. The fire then spread, taking over "blocks and blocks" of East Pine Street.
Multiple fire departments, the Florida Forest Service, and many volunteers worked for hours Saturday night to contain the fire. Smith said the fire was contained to the north side of East Pine Street around 10:00 p.m., but crews would be monitoring several hot spots overnight.
