A woman accused of killing her boyfriend pleaded no contest Thursday and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Bay County Sheriff's investigators Melissa Kennedy and Jason Cantrell planned to kill Kennedy's boyfriend, Clifford Lewis, and then dispose of the body.
In October of last year Kennedy killed Lewis. Cantrell allegedly brought her a 9 mm handgun and taught her to use it.
After the killing Kennedy was found by deputies in a vehicle holding a shotgun and preparing to commit suicide, Deputies talked her down and she was charged with an open count of murder. After the killing Kennedy told deputies she had been abused by Lewis and that she killed him in 'self defense.'
She also said she still made him dinner and 'took care of him' after Lewis was dead. During an interview after her arrest Kennedy implicated Cantrell.
When deputies contacted Cantrell he gave them several different accounts about what types of guns he owned, whether or not he contacted Kennedy on the day of the killing and whether or not he had assisted in the slaying.
However, evidence found in his truck connected him to the crime, according to his arrest affidavit.
Cantrell is charged with accessory after the fact to murder. He is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing in September.
