CAMPBELLTON, Fla. - The Jackson County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday that the man who shot a woman during a Christmas gathering at a neighborhood near Campbellton was killed by her family members as he was attempting to shoot them.
Luke Edward Walker, III, shot 55-year-old Annette Cotton in the head at point-blank range Wednesday, deputies wrote in a news release. His reasons for doing so are unknown, officials added.
After the shooting Walker ran into the woods and Cotton's daughter rushed her to a hospital.
Walker then emerged from the woods and began shooting at other family members, investigators wrote. The family members were able to subdue Walker and he was struck with a blunt object which killed him, they added.
Cotton is reportedly in stable condition at an area hospital.
The incident will be turned over to the State Attorney's Office for further investigation.
