Gov. Suspends Franklin Co. Tax Collector After Sex Charge

FRANKLIN COUNTY, Fla. - Gov. Rick Scott has suspended Franklin County Tax Collector James A. Harris Jr., after he was charged with unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

Sheriff A.J. Smith said Harris confessed to the sexual activity with a 17-year-old male. In an April 3 order from Scott Harris was suspended from his job and prohibited from performing an officials act or function from his office.

Investigators said they received a tip Friday that Harris had some type of sexual activity with a teenager. During a criminal investigation at a home in Eastpoint that night, Smith said Harris confessed to the sexual activity.

Harris was arrested Friday night and charged with unlawful sexual activity with a minor 16-17 years of age, a second degree felony.

He was released Saturday morning from the Franklin County Jail after posting a $5,000 bond.
