Gilbert Makes First Appearance for Marianna Fatal Shooting

MARIANNA, Fla. - A Marianna man, accused in a weekend murder, appeared before a judge this Monday morning.

Marianna police say 27-year-old Ja'drian Gilbert shot and killed another man Saturday morning.

Judge Wade Mercer ordered Gilbert to be held without bond on an open count of murder.

This comes one day after he turned himself in to Marianna police, with an attorney by his side.

The shooting took place shortly before 11:00, outside of a home on the corner of Edenfield Street and Old Cottondale Road.

"We arrived and there was an individual laying in the yard, that appeared to have been shot. EMS was summoned and they pronounced the victim as deceased," said Marianna Police Chief Hayes Baggett.

Authorities identified the victim as Gregory Barnett, Jr.

They identified Gilbert as a suspect and began searching for him.

The search came to an end Sunday.

"I received a call that said that he would turn himself in Sunday, the 19th. And he came in approximately 1:20 p.m. with his attorney," said Baggett.

That lead to Monday's court appearance, where the judge denied bond.

"I'm going to set you no bond for today's purposes," said Mercer.

Gilbert seemed to deny the murder charges before his attorney stopped him.

"They ain't given me no bonds, if I'm a murderer, but I was there with my kids. I called away to a birthday party. I wouldn't even been there if I --- Your honor, I'm going to ask my client not to speak anymore...."

"It's still an ongoing investigation, so anybody with information regarding his case I'd like them to call Marianna Police Department at 526-3125 or Chipola Crimestoppers at 526-5000," said Baggett.

Marianna police are still investigating the motive behind the murder.

The medical examiners are still working on an autopsy report.
