The Jackson County community came together this weekend to remember the life of a beloved Graceville woman who was a victim of domestic violence. Police say last Saturday, Sandy Meekins' estranged husband shot and killed her before killing himself.
Friends, family and coworkers are helping raise money for her family. For just seven dollars, anyone could stop by Graceville and get a full barbeque lunch provided by Gary's Southern Grill. Several Jackson County businesses also donated items, like a DVD player and rocking chair to be raffled off.
The money raised today will help Sandy's family cover funeral costs at they mourn the loss of their loved one.
Dozens of people volunteered to serve the barbeque, collect money and sell the raffle tickets all honoring sandy.
"Sandy was our dugout mom. She was on the sidelines of every sport that her kids played and anybody knew if the kids were out of line, it was 'get 'em Sandy' and so she's there with us. She's our angel now," said friend and volunteer Samantha Gordon.
Donations for the family can also be made at People's Bank in Graceville, just ask to give to the "Sandy Meekins Memorial Fund".
