Former Inmate Suing Bay County Sheriff's Office Over Alleged Rape

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - A former inmate of the Bay County Jail is suing the Bay County Sheriff's Office saying the agency failed to protect her from being raped by a former corrections officer in 2013.

The alleged victim says Pedro Reyes raped her and several other inmates in a closet at the jail. She also claims that several corrections officers knew what was happening and failed to protect her. The lawsuit also states that the victim was suicidal after the incident.

Reyes was arrested in 2013 in the case and pleaded no contest in January 2015 to a charge of sexual misconduct between detention staff and inmates. He was sentenced to 5 years of probation.

Sheriff Tommy Ford in statement to News 13 said, "We initiated the investigation as soon as we learned of this and charged him with a crime. We don't tolerate that behavior in any manner and we held him responsible."
