BAY COUNTY, Fla. - People will start to see some road changes at the entrance of Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport. They plan to add one of Bay County's largest roundabouts.
Tuesday morning airport board members approved the sale of the land to the Florida Department of Transportation to use during their State 388 widening project.
The Department of Transportation recommended the airport add a two-lane roundabout at the airport's entrance at the intersection of State 388 and West Bay Parkway.
The roundabout will be included in the first phase of the 388 widening project which extends from State 79 through the airport.
"They've put together a plan that will enhance the safety on 388. It will have a portion that reduces the speed around the airport and additional signs that announce the airport is coming up," said airport executive director Parker McClellan.
The airport will remain open throughout construction, which the department of transportation said will start next summer. The entire road project costs 52.7 million dollars.
