Calhoun County is Looking to Have an Exploratory Drilling Site

BLOUNTSTOWN, Fla. - Calhoun County held a public hearing Tuesday, where Spooner Petroleum Company presented a powerpoint to the community on exploratory wells.

The company previously asked the board of county commissioners for a permit to place an    exploratory well for oil drilling, near Kinard.

Members of the community were worried about the idea and if fracking would be involved, but county Chairman, Danny Wise says that is not the case.

"There's no fracking here in Florida. It's a vertical straight down well," said Wise.

Wise also said community members were at ease after the presentation.

Then the motion to allow the permit was passed.

The Spooner Petroleum company still needs other state permits before they can begin drilling.

They have also assured the county that drilling will take place on land and not in any body of water.

Spooner Petroleum Company says that if their estimates are correct, Calhoun County would get almost 10 million dollars in revenue.

"if the oil is down their, they're thinking there's nineteen million barrells down there," said Wise.

If all other state permits are granted, the process is expected to begin in early 2018.
