MARIANNA, Fla. - The Jackson County community came together today for a book release capturing the life of longtime county sheriff John Perry McDaniel III.
R.L. Dodson put the life of McDaniel, better known to his friends as Johnny Mac or Sheriff, into words in her book titled "The High Sheriff." McDaniel served as Jackson County Sheriff for 28 years, never losing a precinct in an election.
However, his tenure began and ended in tragedy. Weeks before taking office in 1980, his father was murdered at work by serial killers. Then, in 2007, just one year before his retirement, his wife was murdered in his driveway. Dodson says she is humbled to write this book.
"I'm honored that he trusted me enough to present his life and open up his life to the public. He's a great man. No matter what happened in his life, he never lost faith in God, and he was an inspiration to me. It was truly a pleasure to write," said Dodson.
Dodson's book is available on Amazon and at Barnes and Noble.
