DESTIN, Fla. - The State Attorney's Office has released the body camera video of the shooting that involved two Okaloosa County Sheriff's Deputies. Prosecutors cleared the two men Monday in the incident that happened in Mid-February at the Days Inn in Destin.
When deputies arrived at the Destin Days Inn on February 16th, they found 30-year-old Randy Patton of Antioch, Tennessee standing outside of some rooms. They were there because Patton had allegedly sent a picture to his wife of what seemed to be a semi-automatic handgun with the caption "goodbye".
Video from the body cameras of deputies Jeffery Cantwell and Paul Rodriguez shows what happened next. Patton initially complies with deputies' orders to put his hands behind his head, but then Patton suddenly drops his hands and reaches into the small of his back to remove a weapon.
Cantwell and Rodriguez opened fire as Patton raised the weapon. The deputies hit Patton a number of times. Motel guest Judy Williams, who was watching the confrontation from the doorway of her room, was shot in the left leg. Williams and Patton both survived.
As it turns out, Patton's weapon was actually a BB pellet pistol. Prosecutors cleared Cantwell and Rodriguez Monday but Patton remains charged with assault on an officer and resisting an officer with violence. Patton is due in court August 18th for a pre-trial conference.
