PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - Summer is around the corner which means more sunshine but also more bugs. Experts said this year not just mosquitos but yellow flies that are especially bad. But there's a lot more you can do to avoid being stung including some projects you can do at home.
"Yesterday I was bit unfortunately while I was setting mosquito traps and my hand almost doubled in size," said public relations and education director for Beach Mosquito Patrol District.
Besides covering your skin and using insect repellant, she suggests making a fly trap in your yard.
She explains that you can hang a large beach ball on a stand outside about 8 ft. from the ground.
Then spray paint it black to attract the flies. Once dry from the paint, coat the beach ball in tangle trap sticky coating to secure and trap the flies on the ball.
"At the edge of the woods at your property would be perfect because the yellow flies love shady dark areas," said Mulla.
She said May and June are peak seasons for yellow flies and it's the females that bite because they need protein for their eggs.
"We've been hearing a lot about them the past couple weeks because we had a cool spring so the hatch off didn't really come till later this spring," said Mulla.
