PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. - The Panama City Beach City Council moved forward on Thursday morning, allowing fires on the beach with a special event permit.
Protecting sea turtles and their nests was a major concern during the discussion. However, fires will be allowed during nesting season a specific distance from nests if a permit is obtained.
Both individuals and businesses may apply for the permit.
"The permitting process, especially that permitting process that this falls under, starts at the planning department, but it has to go through the fire department," said Panama City Beach Mayor Mike Thomas.
The changes to the ordinance apply year-round.
