BAY COUNTY, Fla. - Today is national "Dump the Pump" day. In honor of the day, Bay Town trolley offered free rides to encourage people to use public transportation.
Who doesn't love a free ride? Passengers were happy to help in celebrating "Dumping the Pump". Rides were free and spirits were high as unsuspecting passengers reached for their wallets and then realized they didn't have to pay. It was a system wide celebration, but one trolley was extra special. Passengers were surprised on the Route 7 bus this morning with on-board entertainment, a trivia contest and prizes for answering the trivia correctly.
"Couldn't be blessed more. I'm really appreciative for it and a lot of people around here are getting free rides, it's raining outside, dry in here. We've got music and it's going to be a good day" said passenger, Montana Clayton.
Organizers of the trolley celebration said it's important for the community to see all that public transportation has to offer.
"Well it's important to every once in a while, get out of your car, get on public transportation, see the community from a different perspective and also if you want to try it, today's a great day and better yet, it's free all day long" said Transit Systems Administrator, Angela Bradley.
Winners of the trivia contest received gift cards to Chik-Fil-A, Walmart and Pineapple Willy's.The grand prize was a year's worth of free rides on the Bay Town Trolley. Passengers appreciated the slight change in their normal routine for "dump the pump".
"Bay Town Trolley is the best. It's blessed a lot of people and it's a great, great contribution to the neighborhood. Everybody loves it" said Clayton.
In addition to the fare-free rides, Bay Town Trolley also showcased a special bus along the system's new Route 8 today.
