SNEADS, Fla. - A state corrections officer appeared in federal court in Panama City Thurday, accused of attacking an inmate and then lying about it.
A federal grand jury indicted 49-year old Michael J. Baxter for falsifying records and depriving an inmate of his constitutional rights.
The alleged incident happened in July 2015 at the Apalachee Correctional Institution in Sneads.
Authorities say Baxter assaulted an inmate, injured him, then falsified the incident report to accuse the inmate of attacking him.
The U.S. attorney's office took the case to the grand jury after an investigation by the FBI, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Department of Corrections.
Bbaxter's trial is set for December 4th at the Federal Courthouse in Panama City.
