Colonoscopy Screenings Detect Cancer Early

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - According to the American Cancer Society, if we exclude skin cancer, colon cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States.

Dr. Shilpa Reddy say it's your first line of defense is getting screened for the disease.

"[People] easily get their mammograms, which is important, and pap smears, which are important, but colonoscopy screenings are in that category," said Dr. Reddy.

It's an outpatient procedure recommended in men and women at the age of 50, unless theres a family history of the disease.

"It can be 40 years old, or younger than 40, depending on the age of their family member who was diagnosed."

Sometimes there are symptoms of colon cancer like a change in bowel habits or rectal bleeding. It's important to tell your doctor if you have those symptoms.
