Avoiding Falls in the Hospitals

PANAMA CITY, Fla. - At Bay Medical Sacred Heart and nationwide, there's a high risk for patients to fall in the hospital. Therefore, healthcare professionals have protocols in place to make sure patients have a safe recovery.

"Falls that cause injury can lead to an additional stay in the hospital by 6.3 days," said Kim Harrison, R.N.

Harrison says certain medications can also affect your judgment and balance and it's best to rely on your nurse for help.

"A lot of the patients say we don't want to bother you, but it's not a bother," said Harrison. "We want to keep you safe."

The hospital also puts certain patients they believe to be a higher risk for a fall in a yellow gown, yellow socks, and yellow armband. They even add a yellow sticker to the patient's door.
